A crane runway operates as one system with its supporting structure, rails, wheels and crane travel mechanism. When the geometry or support of one component changes, the first signs often appear during normal operation.

Signals that should not be ignored

  • unusual noise or vibration during travel,
  • uneven or accelerated wheel and rail wear,
  • persistent flange contact, skewing or repeated travel corrections,
  • loosening connections and repeated failure of the same components,
  • changed behaviour after structural work, repair or collision.

Why replacing the worn component may not be enough

A damaged wheel or rail may be the consequence of another cause. Without measurement, the visible problem can be removed while its source remains. Elevation and alignment surveying provides data for deciding whether alignment, support repair, rail replacement or another intervention is required.

A practical sequence

Equipment behaviour and available documentation are reviewed first. A site inspection and measurements at selected points follow. The outcome should be a clear technical record connecting measured values with the recommended next step.

Important: the precise inspection scope and compliance assessment depend on the equipment, operation, documentation and currently applicable requirements.
